Where many today do not think of unequal pay to be an issue, women still make less than men for doing the exact same job. Not only in management or high power holding positions, sports is also an issue. Several women from the U.S. women’s national soccer team such as Hope Solo, Carli Lloyd, and Alex Morgan, have submitted a wage-discrimination report to the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission. It was shown that the women are paid about a quarter of what the men make even with the success the women’s team has had. Sunil Gulati, the president of USSF, said that they will work with the women to get them their deserving pay. The men’s soccer team is backing up the women, but is all of this enough? Even if the men were to lose all 20 friendlies, they would still make more than the women would if they were to win all 20 games. Also, any additional game played for the men is additional money they will earn; the women do not get this same opportunity. The men also received $9 million for their performance in the world cup, despite the fact that they lost, where the women, who won, only receive $2 million.

Gender equality is a big issue in pop culture and the fact that many value men sports more than women sports is an issue of its own. In addition to this, unequal pay is a very relevant thing that often gets swept under the carpet, but with this happening to women who are present in today’s pop culture, hopefully more light will be drawn to the situation and the issue will be addressed.
